Hey there! I’m Leanne

your local fernie photographer!

I work with people who say ‘yes’ to cool opportunities and embrace the chance to colour outside the lines.

My jam is working with open-hearted people who value sentimental and tender moments as well as bold, audacious adventures.

I’m drawn to people’s connection with each other, their passions and the land.

I’m seriously in love with the East Kootenays, and Fernie, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. Not everyone can choose where they live, but we did—and I couldn’t be more grateful. In 2012, my husband and I, along with our (then) four young kids, left my homeland of New Zealand.

We travelled in a tiny motorhome, exploring southern BC’s mountain towns, searching for the perfect place to call home. When we arrived in Fernie one gorgeous July weekend, we had no house, jobs, local friends or connections —just big dreams. But this little mountain town captured our hearts, and over the years, we’ve built a life here that we absolutely love.

Adventure has always been at the core of our family’s story. Some of my favourite moments are spent talking to locals whenever we travel somewhere new. Their stories and advice have often guided us off the beaten path, leading to incredible experiences—and, of course, unique and meaningful photos.

As a photographer, I’ve realized how much I treasure the photos I’ve captured of my family and how rarely I’m in them. That’s why I’m so passionate about creating opportunities for you to step into the frame with your loved ones. When you hire me, I’m taking the photos of you and your loved ones together that I wish I had.  Imagine sitting around the table with family, years from now, laughing and reminiscing about ‘when we were in Fernie’.  And when words alone can’t do the stories justice, you’ll pull out the photo book and let the images bring those moments back to life.

I see the world in photos…

the fleeting expressions, gorgeous light, and moments of connection while exploring the beauty of our incredible planet.

Whether you are a Fernie local or planning your first trip to Fernie, I would love to connect and see how I can help you capture your Fernie experience.

Here’s a longer piece of my story

and why photos really matter to me…

I grew up on a farm in the beautiful hills of New Zealand’s King Country, where a love for nature and adventure took root early. Driven by a dream to live near mountains, I became an exchange student in Boise, Idaho, where I experienced the generosity of my host family and learned how much connection with others truly matters.

Back in New Zealand, I studied outdoor recreation, thriving among people who shared my passion for the outdoors. But three months in, my classmates and I were involved in a tragic accident that changed everything: 13 friends were lost, and only a few of us survived. In the aftermath, we clung to photos from our time together. They became sacred keepsakes—treasured not only by us but by the grieving families who had lost loved ones.

Two years later, I took a leap and moved to Canada. Though it was challenging to adjust to a new life and make friends who didn’t know my story, I found my grounding in God, human connection and adventure. At 21, I met my best friend, who quickly became my husband!

For years, (mostly in New Zealand) I worked as an outdoor instructor, guide, and teacher, sharing the most beautiful places and moments with people and inspiring them to make the most of their one short, precious life.

After the whirlwind of having four babies in five years (and welcoming our caboose four years later!), I found myself like so many other moms—completely infatuated with taking pictures. Capturing my growing family’s story felt like a responsibility I was honored to embrace. While those early photos couldn’t compare to what I create now, they were the spark that kept fueling a flame that had been quietly burning for years: Stories matter—both written and visual.

As John Westenberg said:

Storytelling is the greatest technology that human’s have ever created.

photos are a way to capture what it means to be human
and to remind us of what truly matters.
